What are the benefits of using Turmeric?
Most of us have heard of it but never really understood what the benefits of Turmeric are.
What is Turmeric? It is a bright yellow aromatic peppery spice in the ginger family. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for cooking as well as for medicinal purposes. One active component of turmeric is curcumin, which is an antioxidant proven to reduce inflammation and help prevent certain illness. Turmeric is a power anti-inflammatory and of course inflammation is the root cause of most chronic diseases. Adding Turmeric to your diet can help as well as cutting out unhealthy foods (sugar, processed foods, trans fat). Research suggests that Turmeric can help with reducing pain with menstrual cramps, aching joints, muscle tightness and much more.
Next time you a blending up your smoothie in the morning, try adding some Turmeric, or add some into your next healthy meal for a kick of flavor and some anti-inflammatory benefits.
Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, add 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric and bring to simmer for 10 mins. Strain the tea through a fine sieve into a cup, add honey and/or lemon.
Heat 2 cups of unsweetened coconut, almond or milk with 1 tablespoon of peeled, grated ginger and 1 tablespoon peeled, grated, fresh turmeric, 3 -4 black peppercorn. Bring to a simmer and cover for 10 mins, strain and sweetened to taste if desired.
