The Hare bragged about how fast he could race but in the end it was the Tortoise who won because he was slow and steady. Fad diets and quick fixes are just like The Hare, they burn out before you even reach the end. Lets discuss why they don’t work and how you can become the Tortoise in your race to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Fad diets focus on restricting or eliminating certain foods from your diet and usually claim to help with losing a significant amount of weight within a short period of time. Typically reducing the amount of calories you consume throughout the day, some of these diets even lower your caloric intake to a dangerous 500 calories per day. This will cause your body to go into survival mode and start burning muscle to produce energy, ultimately causing you to lose muscle mass. In the beginning of these diets most people will lose a significant amount of water weight, which can cause dehydration. Since these diets are based on restriction or elimination of foods they are hard to sustain for long periods of time. As a result once you revert to your old habits, you will gain the weight loss back and in some cases gain more.
There is no magic diet or quick fix, there is only a healthy lifestyle that includes healthy nutritional habits, exercise and a positive attitude.
