does endometriosis cause constipationDoes Endometriosis cause constipation?

If there is one thing that I can understand, unfortunately, it’s constipation. Yup that’s right the secret life of constipation, no one ever wants to talk about it. However, it’s a reality for many of us, especially when dealing with endometriosis.  When I was first diagnosed with endometriosis, no one explained all the symptoms that were actually related to it.  I remember asking one of my doctors “does endometriosis cause constipation?”  She answered by recommending fiber supplements or laxatives.

Over the years, through my personal journey with endometriosis and as an Endometriosis Nutrition Coach I have learned that fiber supplements and laxatives are not usually the answer.  Not only was I suffering from constipation but I had painful bowel movements.  So adding fiber supplements only made my endo belly flare up more, and laxatives just caused horrible pain.

I have made some changes to my lifestyle which have helped with constipation, so I thought I would share it with you wonderful endo fighter in hopes of possibly helping you.

Whole Foods over Processed Foods.
Whole foods like fruits and veggies are reloaded with nutrients as well as natural fiber. Vegetables like carrots, broccoli, collard greens, artichokes, and beets are great to add to your meals.  If you are looking for fruits, try adding raspberries, strawberries, bananas, apples, and oranges.

Hydrate
I am sure you have heard this before but staying hydrated is essential.  If you arent drinking enough water, then you can expect that your colon is dehydrated which can cause constipation.  Not sure how much water you should be drinking, start by dividing your weight in half and drinking that in ounces. (Ex: 150lbs divided by 2 = 75 ounces)

Movement
Get yourself moving.  Even if you are only able to take short frequent walks in the beginning. Exercise helps keep everything moving including your bowels.  Start off in a place that is comfortable for you and your body.

Step up
I am sure you have heard of the Squatty Potty.  Research has shown that it is more natural for us to squat when having a bowel movement, than sitting. So I grabbed myself one and started using it.

Herbal Remedies
For the last couple of years, I have been adding to my holistic lifestyle with herbal remedies.  Herbal remedies are made from herbs, plants, and plant parts, they are used to help with a large array of symptoms.   My favorite ones that I use daily for my gut health are Digest Ease, Good Night Lotion, and Digest-Support.
