Why is nutrition important for Endometriosis. Why is nutrition important for Endometriosis.

Throughout my journey with Endometriosis, I have learned a lot.  One of the most important things I feel to have learned is nutrition.  Understanding for myself what foods are good for my body and what foods may have a negative effect.   I am sure there are times that you have asked yourself why is nutrition important for Endometriosis?

It is very common to hear others recommend a specific “diet” or “program” that has worked wonders for them. That doesn’t mean that it will be helpful for someone else.  My belief is that we are all individuals, therefore our style of eating should be what works for our own body. However, there are some key things to focus on, especially when dealing with Endometriosis.

Nutrition – the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.

The definition of nutrition, explains exactly what foods should be doing for our body. Food should be helping your body be healthy and grow.  That’s why it is important to make sure that you are having balanced meals. Our meals should include:
– Organic (if possible), lean protein
– Fruits/Veggies
– Healthy Carbohydrates
– Healthy fats.

I am caution to avoid foods that can be potential triggers.  Common trigger foods like gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine, processed foods, etc.   For each person, this can be different.  I know for many women who have Endometriosis, caffeine can be a trigger.  However, for myself, this doesn’t seem to be something that affects me in a negative way.  I do still continue to drink coffee/tea but in small amounts.

Why are these macros important?

Protein.
Protein plays an essential role in building and maintaining muscles & tissues. It keeps us strong! Protein also promotes satiety (fullness) and may help with weight loss.

Fruits & Vegetables.
Fruits & Vegetables good sources of vitamins and minerals. They are also high in fiber, which can help maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation.  We know how important this can be for Endometriosis.

Carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are the main source of our body’s energy.  They help fuel our brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and nervous system.  It is important to choose healthy carbohydrates.

Fats.
Fats provide energy, support cell growth, protect organs. They also help keep our body warm. Fats help us absorb nutrients and produce important hormones.  Be sure to choose healthy fats such as avocado, flaxseed, salmon, olive oil, etc.

Start with the basics and then improve from there.  Using nutrition we can help our body perform at its best.
