What triggers an endometriosis flare-up?

As someone who has had endometriosis for years, it’s taken me a long time to understand this condition even a little.  So I am sure you feel the frustration as well with it.  Throughout my journey, I have experienced pain as well as other symptoms. However there are times when the pain has become much worse, you guessed it an endometriosis flare-up.  I was on a mission to find out what triggers an endometriosis flare-up?

What does flare-up mean?
Well, a flare-up is a sudden appearance or worsening of the symptoms of a disease or condition.
So, as endometriosis fighters, we deal with the daily chronic symptoms and then worsening of these symptoms.

Endometriosis symptoms can be different for everyone, and flare-ups are the same.  Each of us can experience different flare-ups, for different periods of time. We all have different triggers that cause the flare-up also.  However, for most of us, the most common symptom is …. PAIN.

For my own journey and my passion as an Endometriosis Nutrition & Fitness Coach, I needed to figure out what triggers an endometriosis flare-up?  Over time I discovered some common triggers for my endometriosis flare-ups.

  1. Lack of sleep.
  2. Stress.
  3. Inflammatory Foods.
  4. Menstrual cycle.

I noticed on nights that I didn’t get a good night’s sleep or enough sleep, I would tend to feel overtired and stressed, which then causes me to spiral down into emotional eating.  Then the flare-up would hit.

As an endo coach, I work with my clients to help them understand the importance of balance in all areas of their lives.  We also work together to learn what their body needs during different times.  Here are some easy ways that you can help balance your life.

  1. Manage stress.  Look for ways that fit into your lifestyle that will help you manage stress, like yoga, meditation, or speaking with a therapist/counselor.
  2. Focus on your nutrition.
  3. Movement.  Exercising or movement is a great way to help with stress and keep things moving as well.
  4. Keep yourself hydrated.
  5. Good sleep routine.

Most importantly, be gentle and kind with yourself.
